First Lutheran Church Council Meeting Minutes

January 11, 2012

 

First Lutheran Church Council met at 7:00 p.m. in regular session on January 11, 2012.  Pastor Karen and all council members were present. President Ned Doan opened the meeting with the lighting of the Christ candle. Pastor Karen opened with devotions and prayer.

 

Motion made, seconded and carried (MMSC) to accept the following reports:

December minutes should reflect that voting members will be members who are confirmed and have communed and give a contribution of record, as per our FLC constitution C8.02c

GRACE groups- Council links reported out news from Grace groups.

Concerns for the present: Discussion and/or actions taken

Motion Made/Seconded to approve funds to send Mark Willand to Ignite Youth Leadership Conference in Des Moines on March 16 and 17th 2012.  Passed

Motion Made/Seconded to approve the purchase of tents and camping equipment for youth. Passed

Motion Made/Seconded to offer a final mailing to both groups around the ELCA issue. A one page document to summarize or cover additional details after each forum has been held. Documents shall be signed and in the office by Thursday February 2, 2012 so that they can be mailed together by FLC. Passed

Motion Made/Seconded to change the time of the ELCA vote. With the new voting hours to be from 10:30 to 3:00 on February 12, 2012. Passed

Discussion followed about tasks that will need to be done to assure a smooth voting experience for all.

Mailing to inform all FLC members about the call for a special congregational meeting in which the vote will be taken on February 12, 2012 will go out from the church office by January 27, 2012

Council will have a workshop meeting on February 15, 2012 to address the next steps needed after the vote has been decided.

 Motion Made/Seconded to give the 2012 Lenten offering to each of the three FLC missions stated below with the offering from the Lenten meals to go to world hunger. Passed

1/3 of total Lenten service offering to the Waldorf  foundation

1/3 of total Lenten service offering to Riverside

1/3 of total Lenten service offering to Lutheran Social Services

President Ned Doan informed the council that he had received and accepted a verbal resignation from Gary Hennigar.

Discussion around filling the open staff position as well as looking for people to help with the Sunday audio system.

Motion Made/Seconded to create a stipend to go to the operator of the sound system starting at $25. Passed

Motion Made/Seconded to rescind the previous motion to create a stipend to go to the operation of the sound system starting at $25. Passed

Continued discussion around how to fill newly opened positions. Discussion will continue at February 8, 2012 council meeting.

Accepted Gift given by the David Irons family to cement the back alley entrance steps later in the year.

Educate to Grow would like to pursue having a musical service in the fellowship hall on February 26th at 11:00. Council discussion was favorable. Council would appreciate the Educate to Grow group keeping council informed of plans and communicating with Glorify group.

December 14, 2011

 

First Lutheran Church Council met at 7:00 p.m. in regular session on December 14, 2011.  Pastor Karen and all council members were present. President Randy Severson opened the meeting with the lighting of the Christ candle. Pastor Karen opened with prayer.

Motion Made/Seconded to approve offer to accept pool table for youth room. Passed

Motion Made/Seconded Accepted the Petition asking for a vote to leave the ELCA

Discussed of next steps:

Council secretary will send a letter to the Bishop asking to meet with FLC on February 5th to discuss the ELCA process

Voting members will be members who have communed and given a contribution of record as of December 14th.

When to have a vote.

Motion Made/Seconded to have February 12, 2012 from 1:00-4:00 pm special meeting for the purpose of a vote on the resolution to leave the ELCA. Passed

Discussion around providing equal time to 2 sides of ELCA issue.

Motion Made/Seconded to invite each group to have one adult forum to provide information and discussion on the ELCA issue.  Dates available are January 8th, 22nd or 29th 2012.- Passed

Discussion around the appointment of a congressional member to fill the three year opening on the council.

Motion Made/Seconded In appreciation for the First Lutheran Church Staff accepting the PTO system, council will offer the staff 3 days to be carried over to be used by Jan 31, 2012. Passed

New council officers were elected. Installation of council will be January 8th, 2012

Glorify—Holiday Services: Thanksgiving Service 7:00, Christmas Eve 4:30, Christmas Day 10:30

Care- working on Operation Christmas and Christmas Tree gifts for children

Educate –Getting ready for Christmas Program.  Still in need of Sunday School teachers for rotation after the first of the year.

Discussed lack of members willing to be on ballot for church council.

Motion Made/Seconded to reduce church council to 7 members - Failed

Looked in church constitution on how many people must be on the FLC council. According to C12.01 there will not be more than 11 nor fewer than 7 members, no motion needed as long as we get a member from the floor during the annual meeting.

Discussion in preparations of upcoming annual meeting on November 20.

Discussion about financial situation

Motion Made/Seconded to send checks to the following two groups to fulfill our obligation. World Hunger and Lutheran World Relief--Passed

Discussed with concerned congregation members on the ELCA issue and letter from the group going out to the congregation membership.

Motion Made to allow the concerned congregation members to have a membership list. 2nd Amended/Question called vote- Passed

Motion Made to give concerned members the FLC postage rate, which they will reimburse the church.-2nd Passed

Discussion around the cost of a new copy machine in the office to replace other equipment. Motion Made to lease Bus Hub 501 for approx cost of $225 per month to begin as soon as possible. 2nd-Passed

Discussion concerning the financial situation notes placed in the bulletin each week. Motion Made- to leave the FLC financial situation note out of the weekly bulletin unless we have a loan at a financial institution. 2nd- Passed.

Discussion around starting to put together a call committee.

Discussion around Tuck-pointing on building.  Approx 1 week left.

Discussion in preparations of upcoming annual meeting on November 20.

Council will have a workshop to look over the budget in preparation of the annual meeting.

Discussion concerning the Focus and mailing.  Motion Made that the Focus will be mailed to the FLC members. 2nd Passed.
